WHAT ARE MOTORBIKE NUMBER PLATES MADE FROM?

These thin aluminium embossed number plates are made using German equipment that is commonly used across Europe for all of the number plates that you see on the roads. The aluminium provides a durability that is perfect to take on the elements that are encountered during the day to day of biking. Like most standard UK motorcycle number plates, the size of this style is 9″ x 7″ (230mm x 178mm).

Are small motorcycle number plates legal?

Yes. We use laser cutting and CNC routing techniques to develop our designs into tangible products. This allows us to create the wildest designs, as long as they conform to DVLA law, there is a lot that can be done to tailor a bike number plate perfectly to the bikes needs.

These regulations make sure that UK bike plates are above a certain set of dimensions and adhere to the correct character sizing and spacing and ensure these products are displayed in line with motorcycle number plate law. One thing that would certainly make a motorcycle number plate illegal would be to have a just single line of characters. UK motorcycle license plates must display their characters over two separate lines, one above the other.

What is the smallest legal size for motorbike number plates?

If you’re wondering what the smallest legal motorcycle number plate is, this would depend on the registration behind displayed. Due to the specifications listed below, we are required to ensure certain measurements are present throughout. For instance, the space between a character and the edge of the plate. As long as this is adhered to the plate remains legal. This means that the shorter the registration mark, the smaller the custom motorcycle number plates that are able to be displayed.

What size are motorcycle number plates?

The standard motorcycle number plate size is 9 x 7 inches (228mm x 178mm). We stock this motorbike number plate size in many different materials, though we know that a standard motorcycle number plate may not be exactly what every customer is looking for. Small number plates for motorcycles are a possibility though, as long as they adhere to the minimum specifications that we have listed below.

This is why we have started to develop new shapes for the bike plates that we offer, meaning that there are more options, split into motorcycle types that will give you a number plates purpose built for any bike.

We have produced multiple motorbike reg plate designs to cater for the likes of touring bikes, motocross bikes and sports bikes and we are looking to create more. Though we have to adhere to certain laws that mean plates remain legal and within DVLA law and British Standards, a few of the specifics are listed below, particular the motorbike plate size (for motorbikes manufacture after 1st September 2001):

• Characters must be 64mm tall
• Characters (except the number 1 or letter I) must be 44mm wide
• The character stroke (the thickness of the black print) must be 10mm
• The space between characters must be 10mm
• The space between the age identifier and the random letters must be 30mm
• The margins at the top, bottom and side of the plate must be 11mm
• Vertical space between the age identifier and the random numbers must be 13mm

If the motorbike is a little older than that and was made before 1st September 2001, but after 1st January 1973 then this applies to its reg plates:

• Characters must be 89mm tall
• Characters (except the number 1 or letter I) must be 64mm wide
• The character stroke (the thickness of the black print) must be 16mm
• The space between characters must be 13mm
• The space between the age identifier and the random letters must be 38mm
• The margins at the top, bottom and side of the plate must be 13mm
• Vertical space between the age identifier and the random numbers must be 19mm

And for those classic rides that were manufactured before 1st January 1973, the requirements are slightly different again:

• Characters must be 79mm tall
• Characters (except the number 1 or letter I) must be 50mm wide
• The character stroke (the thickness of the black print) must be 14mm
• The space between characters must be 11mm
• The space between the age identifier and the random letters must be 33mm
• The margins at the top, bottom and side of the plate must be 11mm
• Vertical space between the age identifier and the random numbers must be 19mm

Do you offer moped number plates?

Yes. If you’re looking for a moped number plate or small bike number plates, then these are exactly the same size as a standard motorcycle licence plate. Also known as scooter number plates, this type of reg would have to be designed and manufactured in line with the regulations that we have listed above.

Can I have black and silver bike plates?

Black and silver motorcycle number plates are reserved for vehicles that are deemed as ‘vintage’ by the DVLA. This means that vehicles manufactured in the year 1979 or before are eligible for vintage number plates. These black and silver pressed motorcycle number plates aim to replicate the number plates which were first issued to the vehicle in its year of manufacture, and vehicles which are eligible for them are also exempt from tax. This means that you must apply via the DVLA when registering for vintage motorcycle number plates as you can kill two birds with one stone.

For our custom motorcycle plates, we use a variety of materials, which are dependent on what you choose on our builder. These are standard acrylic, premium acrylic, and aluminium. All of these materials meet the requirements and BS AU 145e for number plates for motorcycles. Your classic motorcycle number plates will display classic motorcycle number plate letters in black and silver, similar to those on the standard UK car versions that you can find on our builder. Motorcycle number plates law: Are motorcycle number plates legal on cars?

No! Due to the legalities regarding the required character sizing and spacing that differs between standard UK car and motorbike license plates they can not be displayed on a car, truck, or anything else that is not a motorcycle.
